Gifts from the Heart

Gifts from the Heart

As the end of the year approaches, I started thinking about the ritual of giving gifts and what makes some so special that they remain in our heart and memory for years.

The most special gifts I ever received had little to do with their physical form, but the loving connection I experienced with the giver. Throughout my daughter’s lifeI always told her that the best gift I could ever receive from her is a hand-made card containing a written message. She was as excited to give them to me and I was delighted to receive them. When giving and receiving a gift with love, giving and receiving become so interconnected; they become one of the same. The precious cards I received from my daughter over the years are safely tucked away in a drawer. Every time I take them out and read them, I receive her gift of love over and over again.

No matter what form a gift may take, the most meaningful one is given with an expression of your love or heart-felt attention. Giving can be expressed in so many ways other than in a physical form such as being there for someone during a difficult time, offering your seat, or sharing a simple smile.

We don’t have to wait for a special occasion to share our gifts as there are opportunities to give of ourselves in countless ways every day. Often times it is the small gestures that make the biggest difference in someone’s day.

Aspire to be the best version of yourself every day. Schedule things that help you stay connected to your heart. Slow down and pay attention. Don’t just show up; be present. Listen, be involved, ask questions, hug, be helpful, be thankful, and most important, don’t miss an opportunity to tell the people you love that you love them.

It all sounds so simple, but the busyness of our lives prevent us from being truly present and we end up taking so much for granted. Develop simple routines that help you live with more awareness. One simple yet powerful tool is to start your day by setting an intention to declare whom you aspire to be that day. Writing it down will strengthen the intention and also act as a gentle reminder if you start going off track.

Your life is unfolding right now, so don’t miss an opportunity to bring the best of yourself every chance your get.
